How To Build Your Own Guitar

The art of the guitarbuilding is one of the finest examples of craftsmanship that the world can offer. Fine handcrafted guitars can become more than just instruments, but can become true pieces of art in the own right. The art of luthiery (stringed instrument construction) takes years to master, but if you're mechanically inclined, and, better yet, have some basic woodworking experience, you can learn the basics quickly.

For most people, especially those without significant experience in woodworking and construction, the most viable way to get involved in guitarmaking is to begin building electric guitars from kits and component parts. Various companies offer complete guitars that come unfinished and unassembled, complete with all parts and instructions, ready to be finished and assembled. Replacement parts are also available from these same companies, if parts are needed to fix or modify an existing instrument.

There will only be a few rudimentary tools needed to complete most electric guitar assemblies: a pair of screwdrivers, both Phillips and flathead, a smaller, jeweler's screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a soldering iron and solder are all that you need for most jobs. If you're planning on doing any custom finishing work, a sprayer and a clean, well ventilated location will also be needed.

It is also a good idea to purchase some books or videos on the subject before you get started, to give you some help on construction. The most complicated part of any electric guitar project is the electronic wiring assembly, so it can be a good idea to get some instruction on this subject before you start. Building your own custom electric guitar can be a very fun and rewarding hobby and project. Have fun!
