How to Hold the Classical Guitar

Google

Web Guitar-4u.com

Here is a simple guitar lesson that teaches you the right position when holding a classical guitar:

Sit down on a chair, and place your left foot on a foot-stool. Thus your left knee, being higher, will support the guitar. Allow it to rest against the chest, turning at the same time the sound-board slightly upwards.

Hold the guitar slantwise: the end of the neck level with your left shoulder.

Boys will let their right leg aside a little, whereas girls will place it under their chair, in order to make room for the body of the instrument.

Your right fore-arm rests on the instrument, but your wrist will have to be kept away from the sound-board, so that it can move freely. You hold your right hand perpendicularly to the direction of the strings which have to be plucked in the area between the sound-hole and the bridge. In order to obtain a pleasant sound it is preferable to pull the strings with the finger-nails.

Place your left hand thumb underneath at the back of the neck; hold your other fingers above the finger-board, ready to be placed on the strings, just before the metal strip (fret).
