When going into a music store to look over their selection of electric guitars, you're confronted with a very large set of options. Do you want the blue one? The red one? That funny-shaped one over there? And what's the difference anyway? Fear not - armed with a little knowledge and practical tips, it will be easy to choose the perfect electric guitar for you.
The most important thing is comfort. If the electric guitar doesn't feel right when you play it, it won't get used very much and you won't be getting the maximum enjoyment from it. Make sure that it isn't so big that you're straining to reach around it and that it sits right in your lap when you're playing sitting down so that it doesn't feel like it's going to slide right off.
Many people, when looking through a selection of electric guitars, want something that will let them play fast. One of the most important things for speed is the neck. Run your hand up and down the back of the neck to make sure that it feels smooth, not sticky or tacky. Many guitarists find that a guitar without any paint on the back of the neck helps them get around faster, but not all, so play around and see what feels good to you. Remember, what your hero plays is not necessarily the perfect guitar for you. Play through a lot of guitars and find something that's comfortable and easy to play. Good luck!
