Find the Right Guitar Magazines for You!

No matter what style of music you play, or how good you already are (or think you are) at your instrument, there are always ways to get better. There will always be chords that you haven't heard, styles of playing that you're not as familiar with as you could be, or professionals willing to share their years of experience and expertise with you that you need to hear. Investing in a subscription to one or two quality guitar magazines can give you the information you need to take your playing to the next level.

Many guitar magazines, such as Acoustic Guitar are dedicated to one specific style. In this example, of course, the style is acoustic fingerstyle playing. If you're a big James Taylor fan, this is probably the magazine for you. Guitar World and Guitar One tend to devote most of their ink to hard rock and metal players. If you're into this style, these are definitely the places for you to look. For a good, well-rounded magazine that features a wild variety of styles and players, the best bang for the buck is Guitar Player. Featuring interviews with everyone from Joe Perry to Muriel Anderson, this magazine will cover absolutely anything of interest to the discriminating guitarist.

What else do you get? Well, that depends on the magazine. Some magazines devote up to half of their space to tabs and sheet music of particular songs. If you're the type who needs new material every week, these type of magazines are what you want to concentrate on. Almost every magazine will feature artist interviews and product reviews, some more than others. The best thing to do is, before you take out any subscriptions, look through as many magazines as you can get your hands on, either in person or online, and evaluate them all according to what you're interested in.
