Choose The Right Type Of Guitar Picks

The type of guitar picks that one chooses to play can be an issue of fierce loyalty to most guitarists, with most people sticking closely to one brand or thickness. Some, for detailed and precise reasons, others, because they simply like the pretty color a particular pick comes in.

The type of pick you choose to use depends closely on what type of music that you choose to play. Many players playing folk and country choose medium-gauge picks, while rock players, especially heavy metal and hardcore, choose very thick guitar picks. Picks come in all shapes sizes and materials, and the choice is largely subjective. Many people who have a very fast tremolo picking technique choose heavy picks, because of the precise control that these type of picks allow. The material that your picks are made of largely doesn't matter sonically, although picks made out of nylon tend to be more durable than picks made out of plastic or cellulose.

One thing that can make your life a lot easier is to either purchase picks with a bumpy surface on the end, or to take a hole punch and make a small hole right where your fingers come together when holding the pick. This will keep the pick from sliding around in your hand and give you greater precision and control over what you're doing.
