Nearly anybody reading this can remember Santana’s comeback, though. In 1999, “Supernatural” was Carlos’s first hit album in decades and the star-studded collaboration included artists like Lauryn Hill, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews and Rob Thomas. The latter was a particular success when “Smooth” debuted that year and instantly became a number one hit. A whole new generation of Santana fans was born that year and, nine Grammys later, Santana still maintains his legend status. Despite songs like “Smooth” and “My Maria”, Santana is still predominantly known for his incredibly guitar work more than for any particular songs. His relationship with PRS still continues to this day, due mainly to PRS’s dedication to delivering superior tone. The guitar he usually plays today is the brand new PRS Santana Abraxas SE. With a single cutaway body, single micro humbucker and no tremolo bridge, the Abraxas delivers a stunningly fluid sound that is absolutely necessary for Carlos and anybody who wants to play with him. Santana has managed to maintain a consistent level of popularity despite waxing and waning successes of his album. This, if anything else, if evidence of how influential and awesome a guitarist he is. Santana’s unique licks and solos continue to challenge up-and-coming guitarists to this day, and his legacy will live on for eons to come.
