Gary Moore: Continued

<< Go to previous page about Gary Moore

No matter how often he has strayed, Gary Moore has continued to return to his Blues roots and reach new levels of creativity in his guitar playing. In 1995, "Blues for Greeny" paid homage to Moore's mentor Peter Green. In 2001, his "Back to the Blues" album saw him breathing new life into the genre after experimenting with two mixed-style albums of originals entitled "Dark Days in Paradise" and "Different Beat," both released in the late 1990's. "Back to the Blues" mixed his originals with intense covers of Blues standards like "Stormy Monday" that resonated well with contemporaries and lovers of the Blues.

Still, in 2002, Gary Moore decided to surprise his fans and critics by releasing a collection of serious and dark songs with a new project entitled "Scars," a power trio with former Skunk-Anansie bassist and the drummer from Primal Scream, Cass Lewis. This group released their debut album in 2002 and then recorded the "Live at the Monsters of Rock" CD and DVD in 2003 featuring a set played during its UK tour in May 2003. The set offered not only some of the band's material, but also samplings from originals Gary wrote and performed during this lengthy career.

In 2004, Gary Moore went back to the Blues and crafted an album with great vulnerability. "Power of the Blues" featured mostly live studio recordings that mixed both hard rock and blues with some elements of Swing and some of the profound darkness seen in some of Scars' music. The following year he reunited with Thin Lizzy and recorded a concert for a 2006 DVD release entitled "Gary Moore and Friends, One Night in Dublin, A Tribute to Phil Lynott" to honor Lynott's life that had been cut short in 1986.

His new album, "Old New Ballads Blues" will release in the UK in spring of 2006 and offers five original songs that combine his soulful artistry in ballads with up-tempo, driving hard rock-infused blues tunes that have become his calling card.

Moore's career has spanned five decades and has been marked by a constant desire to better his guitar playing technique and expose his true voice, rather than to enjoy commercial success. His creative and technically-perfect guitar playing has been the subject of many tribute albums, including one in 1998 that commemorated the profound effect he had on heavy metal music as well as "Best of" collections including "Out in the Fields: The Very Best of Gary Moore" that displayed his catalog of music spanning every genre from Blues to metal and even punk and alternative music.
