Johnson Guitars: A Company in the Making

Johnson Guitars, which are rare and sometimes hard to find, are made by Johnson Musical Instruments and have only been around since 1993 when the company began. Their products generally appeal to rock, folk, country, blues and jazz players though their instruments are versatile enough to stretch a little further in genre.

Johnson makes ukuleles, mandolins, electric and acoustic guitars, which they specialize in. The products are considered mid range to high end and have been endorsed by talented artists like Ralph Carney and Richie Owens.

The Wild Card

What sets Johnson Guitars apart from others is some of their unique features. Their resonator guitars, for example, have a beautiful and hand spun cones fixed to the front of the guitar. The cones make for a superb sound and excellent resonance, the desired affect.

Johnson also makes an excellent hollow body electric called the Johnson Delta Rose. Quite inexpensive, this guitar will thrill just about anyone. It's great for rock, jazz, blues and rhythm and features a spruce top, maple body, dual humbuckers, a mahogany neck and, of course, a hollow body for that meaty tone. Other hollow bodies made by Johnson include the Las Vegas and Grooveyard.

The acoustic bass guitar that Johnson released, called the Deep Body Jumbo, is quite an interesting pick. Noted for being a beginner's guitar because of it's versatility, the Deep Body offers a 4 Band Belcat EQ pickup with parametric mids. The Jumbo moderately priced for this type of instrument.

When it comes to acoustic guitars, Johnson's got some of the best. The fine quality and strength that you find in Johnson guitars makes it such a wonder that they're so rare. Perhaps just a few more years for this budding business and the world will demand more of their fine guitars.

Here are just a few of the great acoustics that Johnson makes:

  • Dreadnaught Series
  • 12 String Guitar
  • Jumbo
  • Songwriter Series
  • Herringbone Dreadnaught
  • Red Cliff Series
  • 610 and 620 Series

Also to be noted is the JD-27. It's a part of the Carolina Series Dreadnaught acoustic guitars and features a solid spruce top, rosewood back and sides, mother-of-pearl inlay on the headstock, Butterbean tuners, and mother-of-pearl fret markers. Nice.

Amps and Accessories

As the company grows, Johnson continues to add new pieces to their line, such as bass amps, acoustic guitar amps, electric guitar amps and keyboard amps as well. The amps are mostly of high quality, noted for being beginner amps and are in the mid-price range. Specifically, the Loredo T25R Tube Guitar Amp is an all tube amp whose vintage sound is making waves currently.

Reflecting in That Resonator Cone

With only ten years experience in manufacturing instruments for the public, Johnson is making an excellent path for itself and impressing long time guitar players with innovative ideas and designs. In reflecting, I believe that the uniquely shaped resonator guitars are the best example of how cutting edge Johnson instruments are. More information is readily available about the company at Wikipedia and www.johnsongtr.com.
