Blueridge Guitars: Tradition meets Craftsmanship

Blueridge is a guitar line that is more immediately familiar to proponents of bluegrass. Any guitarist worth his or her fretboard knows that bluegrass players rank easily amongst the best pickers of any genre, and only the highest quality acoustic instruments will do in this field.

Blueridge hearkens back to the glory days of guitar craftsmanship, when artisans meticulously designed every aspect of a guitar to ensure that the sound was resonant, the tone was brilliant, and the quality was incredible. It is little wonder, then, that the company has had a longstanding relationship with Bluegrass Gods Ralph and Carter Stanley. Though Carter is sadly no longer with us, Blueridge’s Carter Stanley Memorial Guitar is widely considered one of his finest lasting legacies. The Memorial is designed after the ‘50s D28 that Carter used and features unique Stanley touches like the White Dove peghead system.

Blueridge has also garnered a lot of attention as a result of their “Lonesome Pine Fiddlers” commemorative guitar, which celebrates the 70th anniversary of one of the most influential groups of any music genre. With such namesakes, it is easy to see whey Blueridge is spoken of in hushed tones amongst old-timey and bluegrass pickers. The company has received widespread acclaim for its dedication to preserving the traditions of the classic 1920s acoustic guitars made during the golden age of fretted instruments. The “forward-X” parabolic bracing pattern is immediately reminiscent of the classic models, as are the hand carved slim necks and inlaid pearl in the pegheads and fingerboards. Every Blueridge from the 000 series to the dreadnought carries the classic dovetail neck and adjustable truss rod that are synonymous with traditional acoustic guitar design.

Blueridge guitars ARE typically rather expensive, but the handmade quality with which they are created justifies the high price tag. Some of the models in the contemporary series are a bit less pricey, though few dip below the five-hundred dollar range. The Stanley model and Historic series are of course a bit more high-end, with prices topping a thousand dollars even for used models. All the same, anybody who is a bluegrass or old-timey player knows how drastic the difference in a quality and shoddy acoustic can be. Blueridge guitars are known for their stunning tone and consistent vibrato and, as a result, are often the guitar of choice for the finest pickers in folk and bluegrass circles. Much of this has to do with the company’s reputation for crafting finely made guitars that are light and resonant but are still incredibly durable.
